North African dance music, West African electronica, and an accordion special
We started out this week's show with a healthy helping of Bruel music from past and present, and then elegantly switched over to the African continent with some funky dance tunes from the Northern coast. Zebda and Manu Chao provided the pan-mediterranean sound to help us make the way back to Europe, and we then inserted a special on traditional and not-so-traditional accordion music, stretching across the news break. Comments from an interview with French accordionist Jacques Pellarin illustrate the place this instrument holds in French music. Afro-cuban music then sent us back south for a serving of traditional and remixed West African sounds, and the show finishes off with the Caribbean sounds of Valérie Louri.
